Dear Children, Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Prescot Primary for the new school year. It’s lovely to see the children coming back looking so smart and refreshed.

Changes.

Over the summer, some changes were made to further ensure the safety of your children, mainly the installation of the new school fence and gate. This gate will be opened at 8.30am and will be closed at 8.50am. If you are still on the yard at this point, there is a pedestrian gate by the school building; ring the buzzer to open. If your child is late, please come into school via the front office. At home time, the gate will open at 3.00pm.

The new ‘Early Doors’ start time for Y2 – Y6 is working well. The traffic flow has eased and the children are settled well before registration. It is a great time for individual study and thinking skills, which we are happy to promote at any time of day! Registration still takes place at 8.50am.

Could we remind you all that, for reasons of Health and Safety, dogs are not allowed on the playground at anytime. And, as always, please park with the safety of our school community – and the residents of Maryville Rd – in mind.

We will notify you when Wheely Wednesdays and Funky Feet Fridays are due to start again.

Attendance

Good attendance continues to be a priority. Here are some pointers:

  • If in doubt, send your child in.
  • Ring the school office on the first morning of your child’s absence on 0151 432 7100
  • Send in a letter on your child’s return to school.
  • If at all possible, avoid medical appointments during the school day. If unavoidable, please send in evidence of the appointment for our records.
  • In line with Authority policy, we do not authorise any holidays during term time. However, please fill in an ‘Application for leave of absence in term time’ form to inform us of any plans.

Uniform

The children really do look smart and are a credit to you and our school.

Please could we remind you to LABEL all of the items of uniform, coats and PE kit. It really does help to reduce the amount of lost property in school. PE kit should be kept in school for each half term, when it will be sent home to freshen up. Junior children may be asked to bring a winter outdoor PE kit as we move through this term. This will be sweat pants and a sweat shirt.

Replacement uniform/kit: Topform (NW) Ltd or Geda, (pick up a leaflet in the school office).

Girls – could we ask that your hair is tied back in a smart, simple way – no unnecessary hair accessories please. Only stud earrings and watches please.

Prescot CP Canteen

Prescot CP canteen continues to grow in popularity, with children looking forward to the hot meals and fresh deli on offer each day. Remember, all children from R to Y2 are now entitled to a free school meal.

If your child would like to change their dinner arrangements, you must inform the office, giving a weeks notice if possible.  Dinner money should be sent into the class teacher – not the school office – in a named envelope every Monday.

Welcome and goodbye!

We have some new children to welcome into school! I’m sure the whole school community would like to wish them well as they start on their Prescot journey.

In Y1E and Y6Sw, we also have some new faces. Two trainees teachers: Mr Williams (Y1E) and Mr Atherton, (Y6Sw) will be working with us for most of the year. Other trainee teachers will be arriving throughout the year; you will be informed if your class will be working with one.

However, Friday will be the last day for Mrs Doyle who will begin her maternity leave, We wish her all the best and cannot wait to meet the new addition!

Year group meetings

In the coming weeks, we shall be inviting you to a year group meeting so that you can see your child’s classroom and get to know the faces who work in the team. We will explain the routines that are specific to the year group and give you a taste of the new curriculum. Unfortunately, we will only be able to hold one meeting per year but we can forward any information if you are unable to attend. Look out for a letter!

The Cornerstones Curriculum

Changes to the primary curriculum from September have lead us to refresh what we teach in school. You may have noticed some changes to topics already. The Cornerstones Curriculum is revolutionising schools across the country. It is based on a clear educational philosophy that enhances children’s learning and empowers teachers. The Curriculum is a project based model that allows schools to tailor their own curriculum specifically for their school, their pupils and their community. It is proven to raise attainment, capture the imagination of pupils and teachers alike and has been positively viewed by Ofsted. We are excited by the opportunities this new curriculum offers and hope you will see this excitement mirrored by your children. Homework & Reading

We value your input and support at home! When your child reads at home, we love to hear your comments, please write in your child’s reading diary. Reading books should be in school every day.

Please ensure that your children complete their homework tasks and return to school on the specified day. And please come and see us if ever homework poses any problems!

Fruit madness!

As a school, we are passionate about encouraging our children to live a healthy lifestyle. As a result, we have started to provide fruit for every year group in school. This is offered at playtime and during the afternoon if supplies last! The children are enjoying the selection and it is wonderful to see some really healthy choices being made. Y3-Y6 children may also bring a bottle of water into class.

Birthday celebrations

We would like to introduce a new treat for children with a birthday. We would like children who are celebrating their birthday to come in dressed in their own clothes for the day. (Please ensure suitable footwear). If birthdays fall on a weekend or on a holiday, your child can come in their own clothes on the first school day after their birthday. We would like to ask that children do this instead of bringing cakes into school as we are always mindful of children who cannot share cake due to food allergies.

We will also be introducing a new birthday slot into our weekly assembly.

House teams

We are re-launching our House System this year, with lots of new responsibilities and rewards. Well done to the Y6 children who applied for the House Captain role. We now have a strong team of children who we know we can depend on to enhance activities in school.

The Y6 PGL residential was a fantastic experience for all involved this year! The weather and the children were perfect and we had lots of positive messages of support and encouragement from parents. Thank you.

Sports Team

Mrs Watts is so excited this year as she is now our Sports Leader and is working hard with Jason Houghton and the Sports Crew to rejuvenate the sports curriculum and develop new sporting opportunities for our children. Look out for the forthcoming letters about clubs and competitions.

Here is a list of confirmed clubs to date. Please look out for letters that will give you more details. This is only an initial view, we are still in the planning stages for some other clubs.
